Pampers is a Procter & Gamble brand of infant and toddler goods. Victor Mills, a P&G researcher, despised changing his newborn grandson's cloth diapers in 1956. He tasked colleagues in P&G's Exploratory Division in Miami Valley, Ohio, with developing a better disposable diaper. Pampers first appeared in 1961. They were developed by P&G researchers, notably Vic Mill and Norma Lueders Baker. Alfred Goldman, Creative Director at Benton & Bowles, the account's initial ad agency, created the name Pampers. These early diapers were large and heavy, made of fluff pulp with a rayon topsheet and a polyethylene backsheet. Pampers introduced a wingfold style in 1966 and a third size in 1969. Pampers had become a national brand in the United States by this point. In 1971, Procter & Gamble changed the pin-on style with tapes. Toddler and Premature Infant sizes were included as well. P&G invented elasticized single and double gussets around the leg and waist areas in 1973 to help with fit and to retain urine or feces that had not been absorbed. In fact, P&G received the first patent for the use of twin gussets in a diaper in 1973. Pampers was founded in 1982. Pampers produced an elasticized wingfold diaper with elastic leg gathers and refastenable tapes in 1982 that was a mix between the early 1960s design and the contemporary hourglass shape, a feature that was originally featured on Luvs in 1976 and became an industry standard in 1985. Thin diapers composed of absorbent gelling material were introduced in 1986. This resulted in a 50% reduction in the average weight of a typical medium size diaper. Pampers and Huggies both debuted frontal tape systems in 1987, allowing lateral tape adjustment without ripping the diaper. Pampers launched Ultra Dry Thins, a thinner diaper, in the 1990s. In the early 1990s, there was also an intrusion.
